Why Do People Get Rejected from Pharmacies and GPs for GLP-1s?

Posted on September 4, 2026 by Sally-Anne Turner

You’ve been online and looked into GLP-1 treatments.

You’ve looked into the BMI calculator, and your score is over 27. Yet no online pharmacy will provide you with treatment. That’s not only frustrating. It is disheartening and can make it seem as though you will never get to your dream weight.

In the UK, and indeed the world, there are strict guidelines on who can access these weight loss medications. And with good reason. Many pre-existing conditions or medications are contraindicated with GLP-1’s like the Wegovy pill and may lead to a whole host of secondary issues.

Even so, you know you want to lose weight and are being told you aren’t suitable.

This is where our team at the Bodyline Clinic is different from online prescribers of GLP-1s. We have an expert clinical team on hand to help those who other prescribers may have excluded due to pre-existing health issues or medications. With over 18 years of expertise in this area and over 100,000 patients helped by us, we know what it takes to help you meet your weight loss goals safely and effectively.

So, let’s take a look at the conditions and medications that can lead to a rejection related to GLP-1s and how our team at the Bodyline Clinic may be able to help you. Please note that we will be talking about animal studies in this blog, which may be upsetting.

Medical Conditions

Under Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) guidelines, there are certain medical conditions that are contraindicated when it comes to either oral or injectable GLP-1s.

Pregnancy

Starting at the top, if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or indeed if you are breastfeeding, then you will not be able to take GLP-1s. NO exceptions!

As noted in our pieces on Foundayo and the Wegovy pill, taking GLP-1s when pregnant is not allowed due to potential impacts it may have on the developing baby and even your health. Indeed, research into the Foundayo tablet in animal studies has noted extreme issues with foetal development, growth abnormalities and birth weights, and as such, it has not been tested on pregnant humans. In a similar vein, breastfeeding while on GLP-1s is not recommended, as it may pass from the breast milk into the nursing baby.

If you are taking GLP-1s and you find out you are pregnant, the MHRA states that you need to stop taking the medication straight away and contact your doctor.

Type 1 Diabetes

Certain GLP-1 medications, like Ozempic, are designed for type 2 diabetes, not type 1. They should not be used as a substitute for insulin therapies.

Thyroid Cancer (history or family history)

This is not meant to sound alarmist, but certain GLP-1s have been associated with thyroid C-cell tumours in pre-clinical studies. In particular, semaglutide (Wegovy UK and Ozempic) was found to increase the risk. So, that’s a no, even if you have a family history.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome Type 2 (MEN 2)

Again, this has not been tested in humans with MEN 2, but in animal trials the risk of thyroid cancer was deemed high when taking GLP-1s. Even the British Thyroid Foundation advises against taking any GLP-1s if you are diagnosed with MEN 2, due to clinical data. There is no noted differene between injectable and options like oral Wegovy doses.

Severe Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis is characterised by:

  1. Persistent nausea.
  2. Vomiting.
  3. Abdominal pain.
  4. Constipation.
  5. Bloating.
  6. Gastric retention.

Due to the slowing of gastric emptying caused by GLP-1s and all of the GI side effects, it is advised that those with severe gastroparesis do not take GLP-1 medications.

Note that this is for severe gastroparesis, which your gastroenterologist will be able to diagnose. If you have mild to moderate, then you may be able to take GLP-1 medications with the help of our expert clinical team at the Bodyline Clinic.

A caveat here! You may have read online that you cannot take GLP-1s if you have had pancreatitis. If you have chronic pancreatitis symptoms, then you may not be able to, but our clinical team would assess the severity of past instances and monitor you closely.

Medications

Another GLP-1

OK, so this may seem obvious, but there have been worrying trends noted globally with GLP-1s that our team at Bodyline is aware of.

For example, to “enhance” the effects of the drugs, some people are double-dosing on the medications. In particular, the semaglutide weight-loss tablets. This is not only a dreadful idea due to the side effects, but there is no noted benefit or increase in weight loss. You will just get very ill!

If you are taking a GLP-1 that is not working as you want it to, our team at the Bodyline Clinic can help assess the underlying cause and, if needed, wean you onto another GLP-1 with the appropriate level of clinical oversight.

Where Our Team Comes In

Now, we know you may be looking at the medication list and thinking that you have been prescribed something related to an autoimmune disease or even kidney issues. But still, you have been told no by pharmacies and online doctors.

The issue is clinical oversight. Online pharmacies and GPs cannot provide the clinical interventions and guidance needed to ensure that everyone under their care can be safely monitored. So, they say no instead, seemingly operating under blanket legislation.

When you are looking to start your weight loss journey, you deserve the best medical oversight to ensure safety, better outcomes and of course, that you reach the goals that you want.

At the Bodyline Clinic, we have a clinical team dedicated to your care. And, when it comes to the more complex side of GLP-1s and pre-existing conditions, we will take the time needed to assess how you may respond to any of our GLP-1 medications.

So, here are the areas we may be able to oversee, with the help of our clinical team.

Cardiovascular Disease

Do you have a heart issue? Unfortunately, research published in the European Heart Journal has noted that if you are overweight, you are at a higher risk of heart disease. If you pursue GLP-1 medications with us, we will work with your doctor and cardiologist to oversee pre-existing medication interactions with the GLP-1s we prescribe to you.

Certain Stomach Issues

If you have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome or even coeliac disease, you don’t need to push aside your dreams of losing weight. Our specialised care will be able to titrate your GLP-1s alongside any side effects you may experience, to ensure you are comfortable through the process. It may take longer to reach your weight loss goals, but we will work with you to ensure you get there!

Mental Health Problems

There has been some interesting research as of late relating to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and GLP-1s, as seen in our SSRI and GLP-1’s piece. We’ve also recently looked into the studies relating bipolar disorder and semaglutide to a lower risk of hospitalisation. However, many people who have severe mental health conditions are excluded from clinical trials, so there is little to no data on how they react to GLP-1s.

We recognise that people with complex mental health histories may need a more individualised approach to weight management. However, our team will be happy to work with you if you are taking SSRIs or SNRIs. Just call us, and we will book you in for an assessment.

Age

There is minimal research into people over the age of 75 taking GLP-1 medications. This is why many online pharmacists and GPs may turn you away at the door when asking for them if you are older.

We don’t think age should be a factor that restricts you from reaching your weight goals. Our team will take the time to ask you questions about any existing health issues, your medications and so on, to assess whether GLP-1 or weight loss pills are the right option for you.

Our specialist weight loss support for people aged 70 and over provides a more detailed clinical assessment and enhanced monitoring for people who may have complex health needs. Just because you are older, it doesn’t mean you don’t deserve the weight that you want!

We should also put a small note here to say that we may be able to help you to lose weight if you have CERTAIN autoimmune diseases. However, we will need to balance this alongside any immune suppression medications you are taking.

We Are Different and Proud of It!

In the world of GLP-1s and weight loss medications, many people want a service that oversees their care with clinical expertise and insights into their unique conditions. At the Bodyline Clinic, we do that and more, helping you to lose weight in a controlled, safe way while respecting and assessing any secondary conditions that you may have.

So, if you have been rejected by pharmacies or online GPs for oral or injectable weight loss options, contact our team today and let’s see if we can help you.

FAQs

Why Have I Been Rejected for GLP-1 Medications?

There are a lot of potential reasons. You may have a contraindicated health condition under the MHRA Guidelines. Or, you may require more specialised help than an online GP or pharmacy can offer.

Can I take GLP-1’s if I’m Pregnant?

No. Research and MHRA guidelines in this area are specific. There are noted birth weight issues and foetal development issues if GLP-1s are taken during pregnancy in animal models. If you find out you are pregnant when taking a GLP-1, stop taking it immediately and talk to your GP.

Why is Bodyline Different from Other GLP-1 Prescribers?

Our team at Bodyline are able to offer you clinical support with your weight loss journey that you cannot get from an online pharmacy. We help people with specialised care needs to lose weight using personalised care plans with GLP-1’s and assess each case individually.
