Diet and the Wegovy Pill

How To Minimise Side Effects

Have you started taking the Wegovy pill?

A core part of this oral weight loss medication is diet. However, there is no official diet to follow. Needless to say, that can be confusing for those trying to lose weight with this medication. Research on oral weight-loss options shows that developing healthy eating habits is essential for long-term results, but does that mean you have to eat salads?

Hippocrates once said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." So, what dietary habits should you establish when using the Wegovy pill to help the medication be effective and minimise side effects?

At the Bodyline Clinic, we have helped over 100,000 patients across the UK to meet their weight loss goals. Our blend of evidence-based treatments and personalised support is designed for each patient's unique weight loss journey. We know losing weight can be tricky, so with our clinical team's expertise and support, we can create a plan that will work for you.

So, let's take a look at the Wegovy pill, the best diet to help you lose the weight you want and how you can reduce side effects with what you eat.

Do You Need to Diet on Wegovy?

When you are taking oral Wegovy, you need to follow a controlled diet to get the best results. This GLP-1 medicine does indeed suppress appetite and silence food noise. However, it's not going to work as well if, when you do eat, you consume high-calorie foods that are low in nutrients.

As mentioned in the intro, there is no official Wegovy diet plan from Novo Nordisk or from the NHS, even since Wegovy pill UK approval. Luckily, there has been research done in this area. A study from 2023 found that a diet based around fibre, healthy fats and quality proteins (as well as adequate hydration) was the key to weight loss on this medication.

The most suitable foods to eat when using the Wegovy pill include:

Protein

  1. Try to eat lean cuts of meat, aiming for chicken, turkey and beef.
  2. Fish is great! Try to base fish dishes around cod, haddock, tuna and pollock.
  3. Pulses and legumes like peas, chickpeas, lentils and beans are a meat-free source of protein.
  4. Soy products like tofu and tempeh are also an interesting addition!

Protein helps you feel fuller for longer and thus increases the effectiveness of oral Wegovy. It also helps to build and maintain muscles, which can help you to burn more calories when you are both active and resting.

The NHS and NICE do not specify a protein target for people taking semaglutide. However, general UK dietary guidance recommends adults consume around 0.75 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Your prescribing team for Wegovy may recommend a higher intake during weight loss to help preserve muscle mass, depending on individual circumstances. For instance, if you weigh 100 kg, aim to eat 80 g of protein a day. That looks like a chicken breast that is around 11–12 ounces per day.

Measuring protein can be tricky to start with. So, we recommend using Nutracheck to help you become familiar with how to add this amount of protein to your diet.

Fibre

Semaglutide medications are known to cause gastrointestinal issues, such as constipation. So, it is wise to consume a bit more fibre, which can look like:

  1. Kale, chard, and spinach (think dark and leafy!).
  2. Potatoes.
  3. Carrots.
  4. Brassica, including cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli.
  5. Beetroot (note that this will likely turn your urine and bowel movements red or purple!).
  6. Artichokes.
  7. Aubergine.
  8. Whole grains! Think quinoa, pearl barley, oats, brown rice and wholegrain pasta and bread.

Like protein, fibre will fill you up. It also helps with stabilising blood sugar, supporting healthy digestion and minimising constipation.

It should be noted that some people experience loose stools and diarrhoea as side effects of the Wegovy pill. This is normal when you start this medication and as you move up through the doses. However, if you are experiencing this, cut back on the fibre temporarily!

You should aim for the average dose of fibre per day, which for an adult is around 30g. Try to build up to this gradually, as your tummy will need some time to adjust, especially if you are taking semaglutide.

Healthy Fats

We've all heard of healthy fats, and if you have tried to lose weight before, you will probably have learned about them.

The good news is that they are ideal for consumption when you are taking Wegovy.

Some healthy fats to add to this diet include:

  1. Avocados.
  2. Nuts, such as cashews, walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts and macadamias. You can take peanuts but make sure they aren't salted.
  3. Seeds such as chia, pumpkin, sunflower and flax.
  4. Olive oil.
  5. Try to eat oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and trout.

You can also try to take an oil/fat-based supplement, such as flaxseed oil or cod liver oil. Why not try to add krill oil to your diet? It's a little less common, but still great for weight-loss support.

Fluids

If you have seen our Wegovy Pill Side Effects Explained article, you will have seen that fluid intake when taking oral Wegovy is important. More so if you are over the age of 70.

However, you should avoid drinking extra calories or sugars. These can cause digestive problems and can increase heartburn.

So, we think to up your fluids, you should look into:

  1. Drink more water. Simple! Aim for at least 8 glasses of water per day.
  2. Herbal teas. Ginger tea is also great for helping with a sore tummy and soothing digestion.
  3. Soups and broths.

Staying hydrated will help with headaches, constipation, and replenishing electrolytes and fluids. The latter is crucial if you have been experiencing vomiting or diarrhoea, both of which can cause dehydration.

Foods to Avoid on the Wegovy Pill

With a list of foods that you should eat, you may be wondering if the active ingredient in Wegovy (semaglutide) interacts with food. In short, no, it doesn't, but, as before, to help the medication work as needed, there are food groups that should be avoided.

  1. Greasy, high-fat foods: These foods tend to be high in calories and can worsen side effects like nausea, heartburn and diarrhoea. They can also worsen dehydration.
  2. Spicy foods: Spicy foods like chillies can worsen nausea, indigestion and loose stools.
  3. High sugar drinks and foods: Sugar, either in food or drinks, can cause your blood sugar to spike. This can impact negatively on your energy levels, as well as cause cravings.
  4. Takeaways and processed foods: OK, this can be hard. But these foods tend to be low in nutrients, as well as being calorie dense. They are also usually swimming in salt and sugar.
  5. Excess alcohol: Alcohol can cause your blood sugar to drop, which can cause hypoglycaemia. It can also cause dehydration, nausea and heartburn. So, if you consume alcohol, try to limit it to one drink per week.

Diets and Wegovy: Can They Work Together?

There is a lot of information online about popular diets. As such, if you are on one of these diets either for your health or to help you lose weight, you may be wondering which one works better with the Wegovy pill.

At the Bodyline Clinic, we are here to tell you that at the time of writing, there are no evidence-based claims that one diet works better with this weight loss medication. You should aim to find a diet that works best for you and also helps you to lose weight, while remaining healthy.

So, let's have a look at some of the most popular diets and if they need to be edited in line with Wegovy pill recommendations.

The Mediterranean Diet

Research has shown that the Mediterranean diet can help in treating and managing obesity, making it a great diet to try when using oral GLP-1s.

This diet limits or avoids processed red meat, as well as minimising dairy, refined carbs and added sugars. So, if you try this diet, you will find that its main focus is:

  1. Vegetables, like tomatoes, courgettes, aubergines, bell peppers and leafy greens.
  2. Fruits, such as oranges, lime, grapefruit, mandarin orange and pomegranate.
  3. Complex carbs, like wholemeal bread and pasta as well as brown rice.
  4. Lean proteins, such as legumes, beans, chicken and fish.
  5. Healthy unsaturated fats from oily fish, nuts, seeds and olive oil.

With the added fibre and healthy fats in this diet, you will need to give your gastrointestinal system time to adjust. Also, if you are having loose stools because of oral Wegovy, try to wait until it has settled before trying this diet.

The Keto Diet

In line with many diets aimed at helping someone to lose weight, the Ketogenic (or Keto) diet aims to reduce your carbs and minimise your intake to around 20–50g per day. It also moves calories to healthy fats and moderate proteins.

So, if you want to switch to this diet, you can expect to consume:

  1. Meats, like beef, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey, duck, game meats and venison.
  2. Eggs like chicken, duck and quail are suitable.
  3. Fish and seafood such as mackerel, cod, tuna, sardines, haddock and crab.
  4. Dairy like cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan, Greek yoghurt and double cream.
  5. Nuts and seeds such as pecans, macadamia and walnuts.
  6. Low-carb vegetables like spinach, kale, lettuce and rocket.

The Keto diet can be a match for medical weight loss. However, you should note that it can trigger or worsen side effects like constipation, indigestion, nausea and loose or runny stools. It can also raise LDL cholesterol, so if you want to use it in tandem with GLP-1s, talk to your doctor.

Managing Wegovy Side Effects with Your Diet

There has been lots of talk about side effects of oral semaglutide online. However, depending on the common side effects that you are having, you can reduce or prevent them with your diet.

Nausea and Vomiting

  1. Eat bland foods, like toast, apple sauce or porridge.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids, like water, ginger or peppermint tea.
  3. Eat small, regular meals.
  4. Avoid spicy, fatty or fried foods.

If you find that your vomiting is preventing you from keeping water down, please seek urgent medical attention.

Constipation

  1. Try to drink a lot of fluids to help your bowels move.
  2. Eat higher-fibre foods such as prunes, wheat bran and chia seeds.
  3. Try to get regular exercise. A gentle 20-minute walk, cycling or yoga can help.

Heartburn

  1. Drink water with meals. This helps to dilute stomach acid.
  2. Avoid carbonated beverages and spicy food: these can agitate the stomach.
  3. Consume ginger tea to ease discomfort.
  4. Avoid spicy, salty, fatty or fried foods.
  5. Try not to eat 3–4 hours before bed.

Diarrhoea

  1. Drink water to replace fluids lost through loose movements.
  2. Switch to low-fibre foods in your diet until symptoms resolve.
  3. Switch from whole grain to white bread and rice.
  4. Try adding probiotics to your diet. These can rebalance healthy bacteria in your gut, which can get out of balance with diarrhoea. Try yoghurt, kefir or kimchi.

If any of these symptoms persist and are impacting your daily life, we advise contacting your prescriber for the Wegovy medication and seeking urgent medical help if necessary. These side effects are usually temporary (being more noticeable after starting oral Wegovy or when moving up a dose), but if they don't resolve, you may need to have a medication review conducted.
