If you are here, then it's a high probability. It also means that you probably know that weight loss is rarely as simple as "exercise more, eat less." Since the introduction of GLP-1 medications to help with weight loss in 2019, as many as 8.25 million patients in the UK have used them, according to The Food Foundation in 2026. So, on the face of it, losing weight has become simpler.
There has been a recent addition to available weight loss treatments in the UK. As of the 6th of July 2026, the Wegovy pill has become accessible via online doctors, pharmacists and weight loss clinics. At the time of writing, it is not available from the NHS.
Clinical trials show it to be highly effective at helping patients meet their weight loss goals without needing to inject themselves.
For your health and safety, you need to know how you can access prescription weight loss medication. Our guide will help you to know everything that there is to know about the Wegovy pill UK, so that you can see why it is not only wise but essential to have any treatment with it overseen by medical professionals. We will also look at how our team can safely oversee your weight loss journey, with the help of our clinical team and medically backed treatment plans.
At the Bodyline Clinic, we have been helping patients with their weight loss journeys for over 18 years. In that time, our team have helped over 100,000 patients to hit their weight loss goals, using a blend of clinical expertise, support and plans that are individually targeted, lifestyle guidance and much more.
The Wegovy pill UK is an oral version of the Wegovy weight loss injection, and it contains the same core ingredient, semaglutide.
Semaglutide mimics naturally occurring hormones that help to control appetite, food noise and even satiety. As semaglutide can mimic the hormones that help to regulate appetite, it is able to help you feel full for longer after eating, thus cutting down your caloric intake.
The Wegovy pill is currently available in the UK.
The pill has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for weight loss. It is not approved for diabetes management like other GLP-1s, such as Ozempic.
To get access to the Wegovy pill you will need to undertake a medical consultation first.
As it is a prescription only medication (POM), a qualified professional will need to assess your answers to check if this weight loss option is right for you. If we deem it appropriate, you will be able to get access to the Wegovy pill via the Bodyline Clinic.
As the Wegovy pill is not currently available on the NHS, you may be concerned about its cost.
The good news is that it is not going to break the bank. The Wegovy price in the UK will vary based on who you get it from and the level of support that they offer. It is likely to be higher with additional monitoring. However, additional monitoring is recommended, even for those who match the criteria for this medication, to ensure your safety.
You may have heard of "sip and go."
This is a simplified way of describing how the process of taking the Wegovy pill UK works.
For this pill to help with weight loss, you will need to take it first thing in the morning. Aim to do so after a minimum of 8 hours with no food. Take the pill with a sip of water (under 120 ml) and then go about your morning routine. You should not chew, crush or split this pill, as it may impact on the absorption of the semaglutide.
It is advised that you refrain from eating food, drinking or taking other medications for at least 30 minutes after you have taken this pill. By waiting for 30 minutes, you ensure that there has been time for it to absorb into your system.
The doses of the Wegovy pill are gradually titrated upwards towards a maintenance dose.
This is the standard guideline. Based on any comorbid conditions, medications or adverse reactions, your timeline may differ.
Missed your dose? Don't worry. If less than five days have passed, simply skip it and take the next tablet at the usual time on the following morning. Do not double the dose.
If you stop taking your maintenance dose of oral Wegovy, you are at an increased risk of gaining the weight you have lost back. If five days have passed since your last dose, do not restart the tablets. Seek medical attention from your prescriber for the next steps.
The Wegovy pill is a long-term treatment. After you have reached the maintenance dose, it is likely to be continued for a year or more for continued or stabilising weight loss.
Yes, it is possible to switch from one method of taking Wegovy to another. However, it is not as simple as many people think. As before, even though both contain semaglutide, due to the route of administration, they are absorbed differently.
As the stomach acid breaks down the pill, a higher dosage of semaglutide is needed. So, for your safety, always discuss any anticipated changes with your prescribing team.
The Wegovy pill UK can cause side effects but not all people who take it get them.
It was noted by a study from the OASIS 1 Phase 3 Trial in the Lancet (Knop FK, Aroda VR, do Vale RD, et al. (2023) that gastrointestinal side effects were the most common, affecting 80% of the semaglutide group versus 46% of the placebo group.
So, when taking this pill, you will likely get an upset stomach. We have listed some of the known side effects here but if you want to see the full list, as well as the warnings and precautions, please read the Safety Information on the official Wegovy site.
These are typical for the first week or two of taking the Wegovy pill and tend to be mild to moderate. If you have worried that you are experiencing extreme side effects, please contact your prescriber and seek urgent medical attention.
As it's a brand-new treatment, the Wegovy reviews relating to the oral option aren't available yet.
Our own Clinical Director at the Bodyline Clinic, Dr Morgan Toerien, also had this to say about the effectiveness of the Wegovy Pill:
"The launch of the Wegovy pill is an exciting development in the treatment of obesity and weight management, offering patients a convenient oral alternative to existing GLP-1 injection medications. The OASIS 4 clinical trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, evidenced that participants taking oral semaglutide 25mg achieved weight loss of 14-17% over 64 weeks when combined with lifestyle support."
In simple terms, this treatment works and is effective. That is of course provided its use is overseen by trained clinicians and assuming users follow the protocol. If you are not losing weight on the Wegovy pill, talk to your prescriber, doctor or drop our team a line at the Bodyline Clinic so we can assess what may be going on.
The Wegovy pill is suitable for:
According to the Wegovy site, this medication is contraindicated in people who have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). It is also not an advisable treatment option for those with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).
It is recommended that you should stop taking the Wegovy pill for at least two months before trying to get pregnant. This gives it enough time to leave your system.
If you are pregnant, you should NOT take the Wegovy pill. Studies into Wegovy have found that it has potential risks to foetal development, including an increased risk of possible birth defects. As such, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) advises against the use of any Wegovy based product during pregnancy.
Of course, the Wegovy pill UK is not the only weight loss medication.
If the Wegovy oral medication is not right for you, there are a range of other weight loss options that can help you. Some of the more popular ones include:
You may be asking why Ozempic isn't on this list. Ozempic is prescribed for the management of diabetes, with weight loss as a side effect. It should not be prescribed for medical weight loss.
If you aren't sure where to begin, contact our team to discuss which weight loss treatment option may be right for you.

The Wegovy pill is an oral version of the Wegovy weight loss injection. It contains semaglutide which stops cravings, reduces food noise and helps you to feel full for longer.
The doses of the Wegovy pill are as follows:
No, the Wegovy pill is not suitable for everyone. Following the Wegovy pill UK approval, it should be used by adults who have a BMI of 30 or above. Or it can be used by adults who have a BMI of 27 or above, but who also have a weight related health issue, such as type 2 diabetes.
If you stop taking your maintenance dose, you are at a higher risk of gaining weight. If more than 5 days have passed, you should seek medical advice before restarting the maintenance dose.
If less than 5 days have passed, do not double dose. Just take the next dose as needed. If more than 5 days have passed, seek medical advice.
Once you have reached the maintenance dose of the Wegovy pill, you will probably need to continue with the oral pill for a year or more.
