GLP1's Weekly Pills Pens and Progress 10

Posted on September 23, 2026 by Sally-Anne Turner

We are just over halfway through September, and with the arrival of the oral GLP-1 medications like Foundayo (orforglipron) in the UK, Eli Lilly predicts this medication will be as successful as the Wegovy pill UK back in July. Why? Because there has been a shift from injectables to oral options in this area of weight-loss medications, and that is where the future of GLP-1’s seems to be headed.

That said, research into weight loss shows potential expansion of GLP-1s into other areas and also highlights some potentially worrying findings. At the Bodyline Clinic, we always aim to keep you in the loop, so you can be better informed about whether GLP-1s are the right option for you on your weight loss journey.

So, welcome to GLP-1’s Weekly, Pills, Pens and Progress 10 and let’s dive in.

Wegovy Cardiometabolic Data at EASD 2026

An upcoming meeting in Milan will take place from the 28th of September to the 2nd of October. The meeting, hosted by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), will present an extensive collection of clinical and real-world evidence. This year, Novo Nordisk (the pharmaceutical giant behind Wegovy) is presenting its research, which includes 44 abstracts on obesity, type 2 diabetes, and related cardiovascular, kidney, and liver conditions.

Of course, one area that is likely to attract attention is the Wegovy pill. The OCTANE study will examine how this weight-loss medication performs outside controlled clinical trials. Measurements include outcomes, treatment switching, and patient reports. There will also be research from Novo Nordisk that involves the higher 7.2 mg dose of injectable Wegovy and Ozempic 2.0 mg.

Interestingly, Novo is going beyond semaglutide and is also set to present findings that involve CagriSema. This is a combination of semaglutide and an amylin analogue, cagrilintide. All of the data that is set to be presented will involve functional MRI scans that explore brain responses to food cues. Other CagriSema research will explore body composition, organ fat and mechanisms involved in bone remodelling.

Long story short, Novo will present what their research team has found about Wegovy, real-world evidence, and their comparison of cardiovascular events among those with type 2 diabetes, as well as the drug’s impact on excess liver fat.

So, we will wait for the outcome of that particular presentation and keep you updated on where semaglutide may be going. It’s likely to move outside just the GLP-1 arena, though!

GLP-1’s and Brain Condition— Is There a Real Link?

It’s all-over social media today that a new study has noted a possible connection between GLP-1 weight loss medications and Wernicke encephalopathy. This brain disease is caused by a severe vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency.

Researchers have reviewed US FDA adverse event reports and looked at medical literature from 2023-2024. 15 cases highlighted potential problems linked to weight loss related to GLP-1 medicines. Of those, 13 people had extreme weight loss, vomiting, loss of appetite or malnutrition. The two medications noted across these were semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Why did this happen? The mechanism seems to be that thiamine (B1) needs to be obtained through diet and supplements. So, if someone is vomiting excessively or has appetite suppression, the risk of this issue increases. Wernicke encephalopathy requires urgent treatment and can result in memory impairment.

Like pancreatitis and other severe side effects of certain GLP-1s, this highlights a safety signal rather than something to worry too much about. It emphasises the need for more monitoring and checks on people who are taking GLP-1’s, especially when linked to side effects like vomiting, poor nutritional intake or rapid weight loss.

As you know, our team at the Bodyline Clinic offers more intensive oversight with the GLP-1’s we provide. We’re not going to stop offering that service to our patients because of serious side effects, as we care about the health and well-being of everyone who comes into our clinics.

GLP-1s and Pregnancy: Evidence Gaps Highlighted

We’ve spoken about this before. It seems other people are now starting to ask the same questions we are. If you become pregnant while taking a GLP-1, what happens?

There are new international guidelines that address GLP-1 and other weight-loss medications related to their use during, before and after pregnancy. The data show a large gap.

Researchers at the University of Plymouth reviewed more than 30 studies, though most were small and observational. More than half of the questions they wanted answered could not be answered using existing data: a real issue when trying to develop guidelines. A core part of this highlighted that no studies examined the long-term impact of GLP-1s on mothers or babies.

At the time of writing, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises that with all injectable and oral options, these drugs should not be taken during pregnancy or even during the preconception period. The findings to date show no increased risk of congenital anomalies following inadvertent exposure during early pregnancy.

Now, this does not mean that these medications are safe for use during pregnancy. But it may help to identify the right course of action if there is early, accidental exposure.

As always, more research is needed.

An interesting week, but as always, GLP-1s that we offer at the Bodyline Clinic, like Foundayo, Wegovy and Mounjaro, are prescribed for weight loss. We cannot and do not prescribe them for anything else.

So, if you are looking for a way to lose weight after hitting the wall with other options, we may be able to help. We have a dedicated clinical team who can help determine your goals and offer specialised support if you have a comorbid condition which may exclude you from accessing GLP-1s via a pharmacy. We have over 18 years of experience in this area and have helped over 100,000 people to lose weight successfully. Sound good? Then contact our team today at the Bodyline Clinic, and let’s start your weight loss journey.
