Unless you have been living under a rock, you will have undoubtedly heard about the popularity of weight loss jabs that are sweeping the UK. Almost everyone has heard of Ozempic and Mounjaro, with the Guardian noting that over 2.5 million people accessing these treatments in the UK.
There has been a recent addition to weight loss treatments in the UK which is set to take off; the Wegovy pill. Yes, there are already Wegovy injections available, but this offers an alternative for those who want to lose weight without injection themselves. And who can blame them?
At Bodyline Clinic, we are excited to hear about the Wegovy pill UK, as we believe it will help many people to reach their weight loss goals. Our team of clinicians have worked with over 100,000 patients across the UK via personalised support and evidence-based treatments, personalising each plan to their unique needs.
So here, we will take a quick look at this pill, what it can offer and how it may be able to help you with your weight loss journey.
The Wegovy pill is an oral version of semaglutide, which was developed by Novo Nordisk to help treat obesity. In June 2026, it was approved for use in the UK and following MHRA screening, it became accessible on the 6th of July. As such, it is the first GLP-1 weight loss pill that has been licensed for use in the UK.
Like the injections, it contains a GLP-receptor agonist that mimics a gut hormone which reduces appetite and increases satiety. In short, it stops food noise and helps those who use it to feel fuller for longer, provided that it is taken correctly.
You may be wondering is this new weight loss treatment available on the NHS?
The answer, for the time being, is no. However, watch this space. Following a NICE assessment in 2027, you may be able to get the Wegovy pill on prescription from your GP.
At the time of writing, this medication is only available via private prescription and prescribed safely by specialist weight health clinicians such as Bodyline Clinic as part of a personalised and medically supported weight loss programme.
So, what is the eligibility criteria for the Wegovy pill?
The dosing for the Wegovy pill UK is different to the Wegovy injection. Those who are using it need to take it once a day, rather than a weekly injection.
At the Bodyline Clinic, our Clinical Director Dr Morgan Toerien said
“The Bodyline team recognise that injections are not the preferred choice for everyone, and having an oral GLP-1 alternative means that more people can access clinically supported treatments that align with their individual needs, preferences and long-term health goals.”
So, from having the option to switch from injections to oral medications, this is a real gamechanger for weight loss.
This treatment is brand new, so you may be wondering if it will work for your weight loss goals.
Clinical trials have shown that over a 64-week period, people who took Wegovy 25mg daily showed 14-17% mean weight loss. This was in conjunction with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.
As mentioned before, for this pill to work, it must be taken correctly. The “Sip and Go” technique has to be followed every day. It is also advised that those using the Wegovy pill wait at least eight hours from their previous meal to take this pill. Why? It increases the rate of absorption.
At the Bodyline Clinic, we know that weight loss is rarely straightforward. It can be impacted by hormones, medications and other conditions which can make it feel impossible to shift weight. This is where our comprehensive approach to weight loss comes in.
