Can Losing Weight Improve Independence in Later Life?

Posted on August 4, 2026 by Sally-Anne Turner

Since the middle of the 20th century (1950), the average lifespan has increased significantly.

What is now called the "ageing population" makes up around 19% of the UK population, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). To put that into perspective, around 13 million people in the UK are aged 65 or over.

With people living longer, health needs become more complex but that doesn't stop people wanting to reach certain goals. OK, so not every person over the age of 90 wants to run a marathon but many will want to remain independent. This is challenging but one way to help keep mobility up is to keep weight down.

At the Bodyline Clinic, we offer complex care packages to those over the age of 70, to help them lose weight safely and with clinical oversight. We know that many people who want to try clinical weight loss in this age group are rejected outright, with no clinical input as to why. Thanks to our clinical team, we can help people who may be considered medically challenging by other providers to lose weight with GLP-1s like the Wegovy pill.

So, let's take a dive into how losing weight can help people retain their independence and what this means for quality of life.

GLP-1s: Why are the Over 70s Often Rejected?

A quick overview of the stats!

In the UK, NICE stats from the Health Survey for England highlight that as many as 72% of those over 70 are overweight or obese. So, why is this group often rejected by online pharmacies and doctors for medicated weight loss?

After all, there is no upper age limit on weight loss medications or tablets in the UK. For many providers of medical weight loss treatments, helping people who are over the age of 70 is challenging, even though it may provide an array of benefits.

Benefits

So, what are some of the health benefits of losing weight later in life?

  • Having less joint pain. Maintaining a healthy weight will take the pressure off the knees, hips and lower back and help to reduce any painful sensations associated with arthritis. It also lowers inflammation in the joints.
  • Better movement. It should come as no surprise that having less weight will help you to be able to walk faster as well as climb stairs and to do daily chores with more confidence.
  • Heart health. As heart issues are one of the most common conditions in those over 70, having lower levels of weight can help to lower high blood pressure and will reduce the strain on your heart and the surrounding blood vessels.
  • Blood sugar control. Many people over the age of 70 have type 2 diabetes and having weight management with medication can help your body to use insulin in the right way. If you don't have this condition, losing weight can also lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Did you know that as many as 1 in 2 people over the age of 70 snore according to the Guardian? Having lower weight reduces the chance of snoring and eases the bad effects that sleep apnoea can have, helping you to get more restful sleep at night.

Risks

If you have been rejected for weight loss medications by online doctors or pharmacies, you may be familiar with some of these. However, our team at the Bodyline Clinic can manage complex care with our treatments and will be more than happy to discuss how we do that with you.

  • Loss of muscle mass or bone. If you use tablets to lose weight too rapidly and it is not paired with exercise, this can be a serious outcome.
  • As your appetite decreases, you may experience nutritional deficiencies. This is more common if you do not have a clinical team overseeing your diet and checking that you are getting enough protein, vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
  • Older people are already at a risk of having higher rates of dehydration, dizziness and digestive problems, all of which can be common side effects of medicated weight loss.
  • Uncommon, but still something to note. There is a slight risk of increased heart rate or blood pressure when taking GLP-1s or diet pills, which in older adults who may already have heart disease can cause serious secondary complications.

Excess Weight and Health Over 70

Nearly three in four adults aged 65–74 in the UK is overweight or living with obesity, according to the NHS Health Survey for England. Unfortunately, there are clear links between this and secondary conditions in this age group, which can make maintaining a healthy weight a core part of elder care and longevity.

Looking at stats from the NHS, the most common health issues diagnosed in someone over 70 in the UK include high blood pressure (in over 70s, usually linked to stiffening of arteries, hormonal imbalances and changes in kidney function – around two-thirds of adults aged 75 and over have hypertension, while around two-thirds are also overweight or living with obesity), osteoarthritis (also known as "wear and tear," linked to joints being worn through years of use – additional body weight places greater stress on weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips), cardiovascular disease (loss of arterial elasticity is the primary cause in the elderly, along with genetic predisposition – one in nine cardiovascular deaths in England is attributable to excess weight), and type 2 diabetes (changes in pancreas function heighten the chance of older people developing this condition – around 80–90% of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or living with obesity at diagnosis).

Alzheimer's dementia is the fifth most diagnosed condition in the over 70s in the UK. It is tied to high blood sugar, issues with blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and excess weight, according to studies like Litke 2021, making it comorbid with almost all conditions listed above.

As you can see, all these conditions are linked to excess weight, making it a comorbid condition which adds complexity to treatment.

Independence and Weight

Physical health is only one aspect of getting older. Many people who age have concerns about maintaining their independence. That is, they don't want to be dependent on other people and want to live their own lives for as long as they can.

A study conducted by Age UK (2024) showed that the most common worries that older people have related to staying independent include:

  • Losing mobility and using aids (walking sticks)
  • Developing dementia or other memory issues
  • Being placed in residential care
  • Being unable to remain at home
  • Needing help with everyday tasks
  • Excess falls or injuries
  • Loneliness
  • Financial pressure
  • Not having access to support or help

For this growing number of the population, maintaining a healthy weight, preserving muscle strength and staying mobile can all play an important role in supporting these goals, while also helping with longevity.

All new patients who contact us will need to undertake an initial assessment with our multidisciplinary team, which is made up of senior nurses and doctors. We will look through your medical history, such as the medications you take, your mobility, your nutritional status, and your overall health before discussing with you what your weight loss goals are and how we may be able to help.

For adults who are aged over 70, we will focus on:

  • Frailty
  • Independence
  • Existing medical conditions
  • Recommendations from your GP
  • Safety
  • Wellbeing
  • Long-term goals

Personalised Plan

After our detailed background research into your medical history, you will receive a tailored weight health plan. This will be based on your clinical needs, your lifestyle and any long-term goals you have relating to weight loss treatment.

Core things that we will consider will include improving mobility, maintaining your muscle mass, helping you to remain independent and ensuring that your medications do not interfere or react negatively with the GLP-1s or other options.

Based on your clinical needs, we may need to discuss health concerns with your GP as part of your weight loss care plan.

Treatment and Support

Once you start on your weight loss journey, how do we help you?

We offer ongoing support via face-to-face appointments or through online consultations. How often? As often as we deem necessary, based on a mixture of your clinical need and preferences.

We know that GLP-1s can cause side effects (see our recent blog on Wegovy pill side effects here) and we will aim to oversee these and alter the medications when required to help keep you healthy.

FAQs

Does Being Over 70 Mean You Can't Take GLP-1s?

Not outright. It does mean that you will need additional oversight and clinical care to do it safely. It may also take slightly longer to reach weight goals, especially if you are on other medications.

How Does Losing Weight Impact Health and Independence?

Losing weight in the elderly will increase heart health, help with blood sugar control, reduce snoring and increase movement. Again, it must be done carefully and with clinical care to be done safely.

What Support Does Bodyline Offer?

Bodyline offers people over 70 personalised care with their weight loss journey. Medical checks, a care plan based around any pre-existing health issues (and medications) as well as help managing side effects. We offer this in person or virtually to match whichever option suits you.
