If you follow the news on GLP-1s, you may have seen a summary of a study that was released on the 2nd of September this year. Claims such as “semaglutide stops ageing” or “taking semaglutide makes you live longer” were floating around online for a few days, with social media platforms jumping on these claims.
Semaglutide, the core ingredient in both the Wegovy pill and Ozempic, is being explored for its secondary properties in the world of pharmaceuticals. A piece which our team at the Bodyline Clinic released last week explored the role of semaglutide in managing bipolar disorder. Very recent research that was presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Barcelona noted that it could have a role in reducing asthma attacks, as well as helping with COPD.
But what’s the truth about this seemingly miracle drug? Is it soon to be the fountain of youth that Ponce de Leon spent his life searching for? It’s highly unlikely, but we feel we need to explore this with you!

So, let’s break down what is going on in these claims related to semaglutide and why it’s not as clear-cut as the headlines suggest.
A quick recap of what semaglutide is first!
Semaglutide is a medication called a GLP-1, which helps people lose weight by simulating a hormone that suppresses appetite. In the UK, if you have diabetes, you may be prescribed this medication through the NHS under the brand name Ozempic. At private clinics, when it is used for weight loss only, you may be prescribed it under the brand name Wegovy, which may be in injection form or as an oral tablet. At the current time, in the UK, Ozempic for weight loss without diabetes is not legal.
The new study came out of the University of California, Berkeley. The media has glamorised this as a study which has found a way to stop ageing or help people to live longer.
Sensationalist headlines aside, what was found in that study and what does it mean? What we do know is that the paper that was published earlier this month found that 20-month-old female C57BL/6 mice lived 100 days longer when given semaglutide.
Median lifespan was 742 days in controls vs 834 days with semaglutide. That’s roughly a 12.4% increase in median lifespan. The bit that the media seems to be jumping on is that those mice also showed marked improvements relating to cellular ageing and improvements in physiological function.
However, it is important to note that a 12% increase in lifespan in female mice does not equate directly to a 12% increase in human life. Human studies may produce different results as, simply put, humans are not raised in a laboratory. Many humans are excluded from GLP-1 studies due to underlying conditions, and the mice in this study were the expected height (or length) and weight for their age.
In short, the mice were not obese or overweight. They were also not diabetic. For humans taking GLP-1s, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines clearly state that they have to be above >27 on the BMI (with one comorbid health condition) or over >30. They are also often diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
So, we, as humans, are more complex and thus, at this early stage, we cannot make a comparison to healthy mice in a lab setting and people who have diabetes or are overweight.
OK, so we’ve established that semaglutide is not likely to be a miracle drug that helps you live longer.
However, the 12% increase in lifespan, even in healthy mice, has to mean something. The researchers in this study have attributed it to being linked to any of the following impacts of semaglutide on overall body functions beyond blood sugar and reduced appetite.
Caloric restriction: Semaglutide was noted to reduce the food intake of the mice by around 24%, helping with appetite suppression. The researchers noted an overlap between the caloric restriction at the molecular level, making this the most likely cause of the anti-ageing effects.
Reduction in chronic inflammation: Again, we have spoken about this in many of our blogs on cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal disease. Semaglutide reduces inflammatory cytokines, which means that markers like IL-6 and inflammatory macrophages are reduced. This could reduce tissue and cell damage, extending lifespan.
Reduction in senescence: These are cells that are stressed or damaged but don’t die. They release inflammatory signals which cause the surrounding tissues to break down. The mice who had extended life spans had lower levels of senescence. What makes that interesting is that the accumulation of senescent cells is a recognised sign of ageing.
Other causes were potentially noted, such as better mitochondrial function, but the core cause that was identified by the researchers was the impact of caloric restriction and inflammation.
OK, so we will be honest.
If there were a medication that could stop the ageing process in its tracks, then it would be the largest breakthrough in pharmaceuticals in the world.
Yes, semaglutide seemed to add 100 days to the lifespan of the mice in the study. However, as we said before, these results need to be found again in a different study, more relevant to the population of humans who are given GLP-1s. And even then, it doesn’t guarantee that if you take semaglutide, you will live 12% longer.
The likely causes of this effect do have more research backing them than simply saying that this GLP-1 will help you live longer. However, as before, more research is needed to back up such statements. Even then, there are so many things that have already been discussed in this article that make a laboratory mouse different from someone who will be prescribed GLP-1s that researchers will even need to conduct more experiments on different mouse populations!
