It’s Movember in the UK!
In other words, it is Men’s Health Awareness Month, which also has ties to Men’s Mental Health Month.
In the month of November, there is a focus on chaps across the UK to grow moustaches with the aim of increasing awareness about early cancer detection, mental health and overall men’s health, to reduce the number of preventable deaths.
Great stuff, but how does this link to GLP-1s? And, linked to cancer detection, you may be thinking: what is the normal weight for a man in the UK? There are a fair few men who have concerns about the impact that GLP-1s will have on their reproductive health, their mental wellbeing and that GLP-1’s may even increase the risk of conditions like prostate cancer.
At the Bodyline Clinic, we have had exceptional results with the men who have approached us for weight loss treatments. As always, we aim to get a full picture of them, from their mental to physical health and to work with them to hit their weight loss and health goals. With nearly 20 years of experience in this area, our clinical team knows what it takes to help people lose weight, from the average man to one who may have more complex health issues.
Let’s take a look at “Mr Average” in the UK and what this may mean for weight loss goals and health.
OK, so let’s start by saying that the average man in the UK does not have a build like Arnold Schwarzenneger in the 1980’s. Thank goodness for that!
The normal weight for a man in the UK is approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone and 7lbs), and he stands around 175.3 cm. That’s 5 feet 9 inches tall. This means that the average man has a BMI of approximately 27.9, which is interesting, as this puts the average man into the overweight category according to the NHS. However, an average weight is not necessarily a healthy weight. The normal weight for a man depends on his height, and BMI needs to be considered alongside factors such as muscle mass and waist size.
As we did in our average woman in the UK piece, let’s do a quick set of measurements. The Independent newspaper found in 2017 (the most recent recordings we could find!) that the average British man has a chest circumference of 43 inches. That is an increase from 1967, when the average chap measured 38 inches around his chest. The average shoe size for men in the UK is between 9 and 10, according to the BBC. This has also increased from a size 8 shoe, which was the most common size 40 years ago.
So, looking at Mr Average, what does this mean for his health, as he is already in the overweight category?
Men store fat differently from women. Indeed, men accumulate “visceral” fat, which is a deep, abdominal fat that wraps around organs. This is the worst kind of fat metabolically, as it drives insulin resistance, increases inflammation throughout the body and also puts additional pressure on the heart. Women, on the other hand, store fat in the hips and the thighs, which is less dangerous metabolically and tends to be subcutaneous.
Of course, when it comes to GLP-1 treatments, this does mean that men have an advantage. Visceral fat responds more to these treatments than subcutaneous fat. This means that if you are a man who wants to lose weight with medications, you are more likely to see a meaningful change in your waist size, your belt size and even your sexual virility.
In line with Movemeber, let’s look at some concerns you may have about GLP-1 treatment. Let’s start with testicular cancer.
Testicular cancer, according to Cancer Research UK, was responsible for 70 deaths in the UK from 2022–2024. No evidence suggests that having a higher BMI is linked to the development of this kind of cancer. So, do GLP-1s increase the likelihood of developing testicular cancer?
A 2025 meta-analysis assessed 50 randomised controlled trials. This determined that there was no statistically significant difference between men who took GLP-1s and those who didn’t in the development of testicular cancer. That’s good news.
Prostate cancer is more common and sadly, more lethal. Again, Cancer Research UK has found that prostate cancer takes the lives of approximately 12,300 men per year.
The research points to more good news here. There is no convincing link between the taking of GLP-1 medications and the development of prostate cancer. Quite the opposite. Some clinical data point to a lower incidence of this cancer type with GLP-1 medications.
Published in Scientific Reports, a meta-analysis from 2026 looked at 148 randomised controlled trials that involved 168,875 people. An initial assessment found a 21% lower relative risk of prostate cancer among those taking GLP-1s. After adjustments, this finding was no longer significant.
In a similar vein, there was a 2025 analysis that involved more than 59,000 men, and there was no difference in the incidence of prostate cancer between men who were taking GLP-1s and those who were taking other weight loss medications.
The reality is that the majority of participants in GLP-1 research are women, and so, men at the time of writing make up a small and underrepresented group.
Does muscle weigh more than fat?
The answer is no. A pound of muscle, and a pound of fat weigh the same. However, muscle is 18% denser than fat according to a paper in the Journal of Applied Physiology, meaning that it occupies less volume for the same weight.
When looking into GLP-1’s, there is evidence that medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro can cause muscle loss. This can make these treatments intimidating if you are a man who wants to lose weight and develop muscle.
This is why diet when undertaking GLP-1 treatment is so important. One of the Wegovy side effects noted in the STEP 1 Trial from 2021 was that this medication (semaglutide 2.4mg) reduced both fat mass and lean muscle.
This trial found a 19.3% reduction in fat mass and a 9.7% reduction in lean body mass over 68 weeks. However, lean body mass includes more than muscle, so these figures don’t represent muscle loss alone.
Does this mean you will lose muscle bulk and strength if you take a GLP-1? No. But you do need to consider muscle loss. Based on your weight loss medication, you may need a Mounjaro diet plan. You may need help with Wegovy side effects as well, and luckily, our clinical team will work with you to create a diet plan for you and appropriate exercise regimes that will preserve muscle. We can also provide you with information on how to speed up metabolism by combining exercise and diet.
If you have a BMI of over 27, or you are ticking the mould of Mr Average in the UK, you may be curious about losing weight, alongside wondering if you are the normal weight for a man in the UK. At the Bodyline Clinic, we have been helping people to lose weight for nearly 20 years, and if you have been rejected by online pharmacies for GLP-1 therapy, we may be able to help you.
Like most weight loss providers, we are aware that weight loss as a topic often means something different to men than it does to women. After all, few men want to go from a size 18 dress down to a size 12!
When you come to us for medicated weight loss, we will work with you to help you lose weight and maintain muscle, thanks to our team’s complete clinical approach. We will create diet plans designed specifically for you (around any dietary issues) and exercise plans that will keep the weight off and help you build muscle.

Movember is an annual health campaign held in the UK through November aimed at men. It raises awareness and funds for health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. It is, in simple terms, a month for mens health UK and wellness.
In the UK, the average weight for a man is 13 stone and 7lbs. Interestingly, paired with the average male height (5 feet 9), this puts most men in the UK in the overweight category by BMI.
No, but muscle is 18% denser than fat according to a paper that was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. There is, however, data from the STEP-1 Trial that has found GLP-1’s can reduce muscle mass along with fat, meaning that diet and exercise need to be a core part of this treatment.
