Can I Get WeGovy on the NHS?

If you’re struggling to lose weight with just diet and exercise, you’re not alone. Sometimes, you need an extra helping hand to reach your weight loss goals safely.

Recently, the words “Ozempic” and “Wegovy” have been popping up in global weight loss news. These are medications that have shown incredibly exciting and promising results and backed by scientific research.

Labelled a “gamechanger” for tackling obesity, and with the UK seeing over a quarter of its population suffering with obesity, it is no wonder that the NHS are seeking to make us of this weight loss injection.

WeGovy (semaglutide) is a prescription medication used for weight loss. It works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which regulates appetite and food intake. When used alongside a healthy lifestyle, WeGovy can help reduce appetite, calorie consumption, and unwanted cravings. Wegovy has recently been approved for the UK market, but it may be difficult to determine who can use it. WeGovy has been shown to be effective in helping people lose weight and maintain weight loss over time. However, the question remains: can you get WeGovy on the NHS?

What is WeGovy?

WeGovy is a once-weekly injection that is used to help people who are overweight or obese lose weight. It is the name for an injection pen containing the medication semaglutide, and marketed towards combatting obesity.

It was approved for use by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in 2023 for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more, who have been diagnosed with obesity-related diseases, and have not achieved weight loss with other treatments. However, people with an BMI between 30-34.9 with weight-related issues who are eligible for referral by the NHS to specialist weight management services could also be prescribed the drug.

WeGovy works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which is usually created in the intestines after eating a meal, thus reducing appetite and food intake. By mimicking this hormone, WeGovy can help increase feelings of fullness, leading to lower calorie intake and weight loss.
