Is Mounjaro Effective for Weight Loss?

Millions of people around the world struggle to reach their weight loss goals with traditional methods. That’s why every time a new medical weight loss treatment is successfully trialled, the world goes mad. In comes Mounjaro – the so-called “King Kong” of weight loss.

The groundbreaking prescription medication called Mounjaro has been found to help users lose more weight than competitors WeGovy and Saxenda

In the UK, as of November 2023 Mounjaro has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to be prescribed as a weight loss management treatment. It will be available to those who have a BMI of over 30 and those with a BMI of over 27 but suffer with weight related health problems like prediabetes or high blood pressure.

Understanding Mounjaro

Mounjaro is a brand name for the injectable pen containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. It is an innovative medication that has recently gained attention for its remarkable impact on weight management. Originally developed as a treatment for individuals with type 2 diabetes by pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, clinical trials have seen Mounjaro show incredible potential in promoting weight loss.

Mounjaro has two incretin hormones and it is classified as a ‘dual-agonist’.  This double agonist approach seems to cause people who use Mounjaro weekly injections to lose even more weight than those who use a single-agonist medication such as Wegovy.  These receptors stimulate hormones that control blood sugar levels and reduce appetite, triggering weight loss.  The receptors are known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

Bodyline is at the forefront of providing the latest obesity treatment options, as we continue to offer safe, effective, and sustainable medical weight loss programmes.

The Promise of Mounjaro in Weight Loss

Research has demonstrated promising results for Mounjaro in terms of weight loss and blood sugar control. In a meta-analysis of 22 trials comparing Mounjaro with other GLP-1 receptor agonists, researchers found that tirzepatide was superior to other medications in controlling blood sugar levels and promoting weight loss.

This review found a weekly injection of Mounjaro (taken at a dose of 10 mg or 15 mg) was more effective for weight loss than a weekly injection of Wegovy (taken at a dose of 2.4 mg).

Another trial, comparing the impact of tirzepatide against a placebo, saw almost 96% of users lose more than 5% of their body weight.

When can I get Mounjaro?

What sets Mounjaro apart from other weight loss medications? Firstly, Mounjaro’s effectiveness in promoting weight loss surpasses that of other single GLP-1 receptor agonists. Its unique formulation and dosage make it a potential game-changer in the field of obesity treatment.

Mounjaro is now authorised for adults with a BMI of 30kg/m² or more (obesity), as well as those with a BMI between 27-30kg/m² (overweight) who also have weight-related health problems such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.  The medicine is to be used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, which is why it is so important to be prescribed as part of a fully supported medical weight loss programme.

The Importance of Medical Supervision

It is important to note that Mounjaro, like any prescription medication, should only be used under proper medical supervision. Weight loss medications are most effective when integrated into a comprehensive program that includes a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity, and lifestyle modifications.

At Bodyline, we take a comprehensive approach to weight loss, considering each individual’s unique needs and goals. Searches for semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide (brand names WeGovy/Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Saxenda respectively) have increased dramatically in the past year, and interest continues to rise. That’s because for the first time ever, there seems to be a potential long-term solution to the obesity epidemic that has afflicted the world over the past 30 years.
If you're on a weight loss journey and are prescribed medication to aid in this process, it's essential to manage your medication intake effectively during Ramadan to ensure both your health and adherence to religious obligations.
Despite the enormous popularity of WeGovy and its incredible impact on weight loss, a shortage of the injectable weight loss therapy has been ongoing in recent months. The semaglutide-containing injection has been dubbed “game-changing” for the treatment of obesity, and demand has been high, but manufacturer Novo Nordisk has struggled to keep up and has only released limited stock.
