There has recently been a lot of media attention surrounding obesity and the risk factors that come alongside it – firstly a link between COVID-19 and obesity, and now new evidence has emerged that links obesity with dementia in later life. With the current global pandemic causing a serious threat to many people’s lives, and many more health risks being linked with obesity in general, it’s important now more than ever to make changes to your lifestyle in order to live a longer and happier life.
The Research
Scientists from University College London (UCL) have conducted research that reveals a very real link between obesity and dementia. Participants with a BMI of over 30 had a 31% greater chance of developing dementia in later life, and women with higher abdominal fat had a 39% increased risk of developing dementia. Experts are now warning that the UK could be facing a “ticking time-bomb” if nothing is done to tackle the obesity crisis that we’re facing.

What does this mean for me?
The evidence suggests that losing weight and lowering your BMI could drastically reduce your chances of developing dementia, and this could help to significantly reduce the amount of dementia cases and deaths every year worldwide. Obesity is also a huge contributing factor and cause of many other health problems, including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. If you have a strong family history of any of these obesity related health conditions, reducing your BMI and leading a healthier lifestyle could help you live a much longer life and prevent you from developing any of these life-threatening problems.
