Will my GP prescribe Wegovy?

Will My GP Prescribe WeGovy?

WeGovy (semaglutide) is a weight loss medication manufactured by the drugs company Novo Nordisk that has been approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for use in the UK. It is a once-weekly injection pen containing the medication semaglutide, and marketed towards combatting obesity. While WeGovy is available through private medical weight loss clinics, many people wonder if their GP can prescribe WeGovy.

What is WeGovy?

The medication works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which is usually created in the intestines after eating a meal, thus reducing appetite and food intake. By mimicking this hormone, WeGovy can help increase feelings of fullness, leading to lower calorie intake and weight loss.

You may have heard of WeGovy as it is the same medication as Ozempic, the injectable pen famed for its game changing weight loss results in celebrities around the world. While Ozempic was originally marketed as a diabetes medication, WeGovy’s sole purpose is the incredible weight loss results it can achieve.

Patients around the UK will have seen the amazing effects of WeGovy, and NICE have now recommended the use of semaglutide in prescribing for patients on the NHS via a GP referral into a specialist weight management service.

Can I get WeGovy from my GP?

Your GP can refer you to a specialist weight management service where you could be prescribed WeGovy, but only if you meet certain criteria. WeGovy is approved for use by adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more who have been diagnosed with obesity-related diseases and have not achieved weight loss with other treatments. However, people with a BMI between 30-34.9 with weight-related medical issues could also be prescribed the drug. It has been available to NHS patients in England from Sept 2023 is confirmed by manufacturer Novo Nordisk.

It’s important to remember that WeGovy is a new medication for the NHS, and there may be waitlists involved or you may not have the required criteria to be referred to the specialist weight management service. If you do not meet the criteria for NHS prescription, WeGovy is still available to you through private and safe medical weight loss clinics like Bodyline, and without the wait.

Patients inject themselves once a week with pens pre-filled with semaglutide. The drug will curb appetite and halt cravings by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is released in the intestines after eating. It leads people to feel fuller and results in people eating less and reducing calorie intake.
