Weight loss is usually achieved by a good mix of regular exercise and a healthy, well-balanced diet. There are many fad diets, tips and tricks that often circulate online about how you can lose weight fast, but it’s difficult to decipher which ones really work?
Apple cider vinegar is thought to be beneficial for weight loss, and although it’s not the most appealing food of choice, there is plenty of evidence to show that it works.
What is it and how does it work?
Apple cider vinegar is a very acidic drink that is thought to aid weight loss. It’s known for its strong odour and a very distinguished taste. One study showed that those who drank one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar every day lost an average of 2.6lbs, and those that had two lost 3.7lbs, according to the US National Liberty of Medicine.
A different study found that those who drank apple cider vinegar with a high carb meal ate up to 275 less calories during the day, suggesting it has appetite reducing properties. This happens due to the cider playing a part in slowing down the speed at which food leaves your stomach, making your feel fuller for longer.
Whilst it’s not yet fully understood why exactly this happened during the studies, it’s thought that the acid in the drink stimulates a breakdown of fat and encourages the body’s metabolism to kick into gear at a faster pace.
What should I do?
One or two tablespoons per day is all it takes when it comes to apple cider vinegar. Taking this with a meal seems to be the preferred and recommended choice and could help you to stomach the acidic flavour. Mixi it with water to not only dilute the flavour but helps to reduce the burning sensation that you may feel from drinking it straight. Mixing it into a salad dressing with olive oil can often be quite flavourful.
It’s recommended to start off with just one tablespoon, only increasing this to two or three throughout one day, as overconsumption can have negative impacts to your tooth enamel and can in some cases cause nausea.
Consuming other ciders may also be beneficial in moderate amounts, although there’s not enough research at the moment to say which can benefit what functions.
