What is Vitamin D?

The new advice from PHE is that adults and children over the age of one should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D, particularly during autumn and winter.

People who have a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency are being advised to take a supplement all year round.

People with dark skin, from African, African-Caribbean and South Asian backgrounds, may also not get enough vitamin D from sunlight in the summer, so again we’d suggest they consider taking a supplement all year round as well.

How do I know if I am deficient?

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms include feeling very tired, having aches and pains, or feeling very sleepy, but there can be other tell-tale signs. As always, we would advise anyone feeling unwell or with unexplained symptoms to visit a GP.

Vitamin D is very important to the overall health of the body, as it helps to keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy. It’s needed to regulate the amount of calcium in the phosphate in the body, according to the NHS. Without enough vitamin D in your diet, it could lead to some serious complications, including osteomalacia and rickets. You could be at risk of a vitamin D deficiency if you suddenly find you’ve lost some of your hair.

Hair loss could be an early warning sign that you need more vitamin D in your diet, as this vitamin is needed for hair follicles to remain healthy, as it supplies them with key nutrients.

Your hair can subsequently become weak and brittle without enough vitamin D.

Being deficient in vitamin D can also lead to a host of sleep issues, including sleep disruption, insomnia, and overall poor sleep quality.
